The relative density is.975. Melting point -43ºC. Boiling point 126.8ºC. Flash point (closed cup) 32.8ºC. Refractive index 1.3846. Insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol, ether and other organic solvents. Flammable, easy to form explosive mixtures with air. Anhydrous ethanol reacts with phosgene to form ethyl chloroformate, which then reacts with ethanol to form diethyl carbonate. It is then washed and distilled to produce the finished product.

Main uses:
1, used as a solvent for cellulose nitrate, natural and synthetic resins.
2, an important intermediate in organic synthesis, for the synthesis of phenobarbital and pyrethrin and for the coating of cathodes in electronic tubes.
