Insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol, ether and other organic solvents. Flammable, easy to form explosive mixtures with air. Anhydrous ethanol reacts with phosgene to form ethyl chloroformate, which then reacts with ethanol to form diethyl carbonate. It is then washed and distilled to produce the finished product.
Main uses:
